Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney Split: Their Sweetest Quotes About Each Other

Remembering happier times. Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney weren’t shy about expressing their love for one another during their five-year relationship.

As Us Weekly reported Tuesday, July 19, the couple split and ended their engagement earlier this month. “She was really crushed,” a source told Us of Gaga, who recently went on a girls' trip to Cabo to “get away and get over it.”

The “Bad Romance” singer, 30, and the Chicago Fire actor, 35, first started dating in 2011 and got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2015. During their half-decade romance, the pair spoke fondly about each other on multiple occasions. Below, Us Weekly rounds up Gaga's and Kinney’s sweetest quotes through the years.

On How They Met

“The first time he met me, it was on the set of [my] ‘Yoü and I’ video,” Gaga said during a November 2013 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “So I’ve got these pins sticking out of my head, and I’m wearing cork and I got no hair and I’m bald. And I mean, why he found me attractive just completely behooves me. And we were in the middle of this scene and I remember that he kissed me and it wasn’t scripted for him to kiss me and I was sort of like, ‘Um, you know, was that real or was that fake?’ And he didn’t really say anything, and that was fine by me and we kept filming.”

Kinney shared his side of the story during an October 2015 appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “I remember I went up, and we’re rolling, and I kissed her and she didn’t expect it,” he told host Andy Cohen. “They cut, and she slapped me. And then it was just awkward. And then the next take, I just did it again and then she didn’t slap me.”

He later told Entertainment Tonight in January 2016: “I loved her from the moment I met her.”

On How They Complemented Each Other

“I’m reserved. She’s not,” the Chicago Med actor told E! News in January 2014. “For whatever reason it works. It works and that’s that.”

“Well, he’s a hidden weirdo. He is extremely strange, actually, and we complement each other’s weirdness,” the songwriter told Ellen DeGeneres in November 2013. “That’s actually one of the first things he ever said to me. It’s a Dr. Seuss quote that you find in someone else a compatible weirdness.”

On Their Daily Life

“We’re boys,” Gaga told DeGeneres in 2013. “I wear his flannels. We eat pizza. We watch TV. And then I play him my next single and ask him if he likes it. And that’s our normal life.”

On Their Careers

“I’m lucky to be with someone who has a great job, and he cares about his job,” the Grammy winner told Howard Stern in November 2013. “And he also doesn’t care about me being famous. I’m not famous to him. I’m his baby.”

The hunky actor, for his part, once revealed that he’d like to work with Gaga again in the future. “I would love doing something with her,” he told E! News in October 2015. “I don’t know that we’ve done anything work-wise since [‘Yoü and I’]. I wouldn’t put that out of the realm of possibilities.”

On Their Relationship

“We’ll go days at a time without talking and then we’ll talk every day,” Gaga told Stern in November 2013. “The way that it really works is that we trust each other. He’s on his journey and I’m on mine and we’re gypsies. And then, when we’re together, we’re really in love and that’s it.”

Later that month, she gushed to DeGeneres: “At the end of the day, he’s my best friend. And having your lover be your best friend, I mean, it’s the best thing ever. It’s the best thing I can say about it.”

On Their Engagement

“I just knew. It wasn’t a lightbulb going off,” Kinney once told The Chicago Tribune of his decision to propose to his longtime love. “It was in Manhattan. It was snowing. It was beautiful.”

After the engagement, Gaga posted a photo of her stunning heart-shaped diamond ring, gushing, “He gave me his heart on Valentine’s Day, and I said YES!”
